When was the first Ritual Book published by the Grand Lodge of the State of New York?

The answer may surprise you.

Ready? – 1960

But wait, I have one from 1901 you may exclaim!

The book you have is most likely an old cheat book published by someone else.

In 1860 a Grand Master of NY said we should standardize the ritual.

After a few decades, we arrived at our first monitor in 1884.

Between 1884 and 1989 we had at least 29 changes to the monitor.

1960 was the first “Standard Works and Lectures” book the Grand Lodge

of the State of New York published.

Some may brag everything was done mouth to ear, but the truth is…

Most of the important lodges had the entire ritual (standard works and lectures)

printed out in a book and hidden in the safe. These were called an expose or exposé.

Often when there was a dispute on the proper word, the secretary would sneak

into the safe and use the expose to settle and solve the question.

When William Morgan sent the ritual to the press to expose the secrets, he didn’t

write the entire ritual himself, he stole the expose from the safe to perpetrate

the violation of his obligation.
